rockhurst's secondary education degree offers initial teacher certification in grades 9 through 12, preparing you to become a caring leader in secondary education who engages in innovative teaching, collaboration, and reflective practice.
through significant intellectual study and a diverse set of field and service-learning experiences, you’ll acquire the knowledge, skills, and disposition necessary to instruct diverse learners as a secondary teacher in the 21st-century classroom.
our accredited bachelor of secondary education degree fosters inquiry, intellectual creativity, and evidence-based decision-making skills to equip you to face challenges in today’s global society.
students in the secondary education major will double major in their concentration area: biology, business, chemistry, english, french k-12, mathematics, physics, social science or spanish k-12.
rockhurst also offers degrees in elementary education, special education, and a minor in educational studies.

the missouri teaching standards convey the expectations of performance for professional teachers in missouri. the standards are based on teaching theory indicating that graduates become effective teachers who:

the student’s degree, either a b.a. or a b.s., is determined by the certification area, which is listed as their primary major. students whose primary major is in math, chemistry, biology, or physics will earn a b.s. degree. students whose primary major is in english, spanish, french, history or political science will earn a b.a. degree. secondary education students will have an education advisor, as well as an advisor in their chosen certification area.
